My First Blog Post

This is my first blog post. I have to tell you that I am quite unsure of myself. I have been reading other blog posts and wonder if I can measure up. I am an upper middle aged woman who loves to read and write. I have stacks of books and journals to prove it.

My first blog post is going to be about my great-grandmother. I was about five years old when I stayed overnight. I had fun helping my grandma in the garden that day and helping her to make dinner, or supper where I’m from.

When the day was over, my grandma put me on the couch to sleep since they didn’t have any guest bedrooms. She had a big writing desk that was across the room from the couch. I really was’t that sleepy since it was quite a bit before my regular bedtime so I waited and watched what she did.

Next she went to the writing desk and sat down and pulled out a little book with a rough looking cover. She started writing in it and she wrote for quite a long time. I was starting to get sleepy but I managed to stay awake long enough to see her pull out another book. This one was big and black, I fell asleep. It was only years later that I discovered what she was doing.

I was raised Catholic and my grandmother was a Protestant. We had a Bible in the house but it was very big and sat on a stand in  my parent’s bedroom. I often wondered what was inside that book but the Bible wasn’t read in our house, instead it was treated like a showpiece.

Years later I left the Catholic Church and married a Protestant. I got my first Bible shortly after that and I decided I was going to read it just like my great-grandmother did. It started out slow but soon I was engrossed with the stories.

I found myself reading more and more each day. Since then I have read the Bible several times and each time I read it I find I get something new out of it.

Also, like my great-grandmother, I journal. I write about my life and my experiences with reading the Bible.

God loves us and he wants to know us. He also wants us to know him. What better way to know him than to read his holy word and write down what you have learned.

Joshua 1:8 says, “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth; you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to act in accordance with all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall be successful.” NRSV

I am so glad that God gave us his wonderful book. I marvel at the magnificence of it and delight in what I have learned.

I am reminded of a little song we teach our youngsters in Sunday School. The B-I-B-L-E. It goes like this, the B-I-B-L-E, yes that’s the book for me, I stand alone on the book of God, the B-I-B-L-E.

Let us pray, dear God, we strive to be like you and get to know you better through your word. Help us to have the patience and the time to sit down and read each day, even if it’s only for a few minutes. Continue to open our eyes to what your word is saying to us. Amen
