Right Between The Eyes

I used to be the Children’s Ministry Director at my church. One day I ordered a bunch of small toys for a game fair I was hosting. In the lot were whistles, balls, jacks and boomerangs. Everything looked harmless except for the boomerangs. I thought, “What if someone gets hurt with them”. Then I dismissed the idea thinking that the kids wouldn’t be able to throw them right anyway.

Everyone had fun at the game fair; it was a success. Everyone had a toy including the bright pink boomerangs with “Jesus loves you” printed on them. Just to be safe I told the kids to make sure they were outside when they were playing with them. I was a little worried I admit.

The next day I got a call from one of the parents, their son got one of the boomerangs and went outside to try it out. He threw it and it came right back to him and hit him smack between the eyes. The spot where it hit him was bleeding quite a bit so they took him to the emergency room; he had to have stitches!

Like this little boy, sometimes we get hit right between the eyes with our faith; it is often referred to as being saved.

Some people can remember right where they were when they invited Jesus into their hearts. I knew a young man who knew exactly where he was, what date and time it was, even what chair he was setting in when he claimed Jesus as his Lord and Savior.

I don’t remember being saved; I have always known Jesus as my Savior. Is it wrong that I don’t remember an exact time or moment?

I finally decided that it really didn’t matter where or when I was saved but that I was saved. Salvation is a free gift given by the Holy Spirit in our response to claiming Jesus as our Lord, believing that he died on the cross to save us from our sins.

The Bible says this in Romans 10:9, “If you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” NRSV

Salvation is not earned through good deeds or the amount of time you spend in the pew on Sunday. It is given by accepting Jesus as our Lord through our faith in him and by turning away from sin.

To me, salvation is a continuous process throughout our lives. We must keep our faith strong and be one with Christ to receive this free gift.

Don’t wait to be hit right between the eyes, talk to Jesus, claim him as your own.

Dear God, help us to continually claim you as our Lord and Savior so that we will continue to receive your loving grace. Amen
