Draw Near To Me

Sunday is a special day at our house. My husband and I start out the day by going to a local coffee shop about an hour before church. I order my usual latte and my husband orders an iced tea. We both order a blueberry muffin and sit at our usual table.

During this time together we not only enjoy our treats but also enjoy each other. We talk and talk about our days over the past week and really enjoy our time.

In this day and age it is very important for married couples to sit down and talk. Making a weekly coffee date has really improved our relationship. We rush through our week with our jobs, children and homes, sometimes saying little or nothing to each other.

In the same way we cultivate a relationship with each other, it is very important to have a healthy relationship with God.

James 4:8 says, “Draw near to God and he will draw near to you.” NRSV

How can we get to know our God better?

  • Quite time. Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God” NRSV Enjoy the peace of God’s voice. Go on a nature hike, enjoy some quiet time with him. Try writing in a journal.
  • Scripture. Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” NRSV Set aside time to read your Bible. Refresh your mind with the word of God.
  • Prayer. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 “Pray without ceasing” NRSV Some people pray in the morning, some at night. I have developed a habit of praying at night before I go to bed. Talk to him as if you’re talking to a friend.
  • Meditation Psalm 17:6  “I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me, hear my words.” NRSV Go into a quiet place. Put away your phone. Listen for his voice and let your mind be still.

Developing a regular time to spend with God can help you to stay connected with him so you do not fall away from his grace. In spending time with him, you will enjoy a deeper sense of peace, love and joy. Make a regular date with God, and draw near to him.

Let us pray, dear God, help us to blot out the many distractions that we face in the world today. Be with us as we seek to cultivate a better relationship with you. Help us to understand what you are saying to us. Let us be one with you. Amen

  1. Thank you for this wonderful reminder to spend that quiet time each day with the Lord. Reading His Word, and spending time in prayer for the needs of others as well as our own personal needs, as well as giving time for praise and worship, draws us closer to the Lord and gives us the strength and courage to face the new day with hope and peace. These devotionals are excellent! Thank you for sharing them with us.
