From Darkness to Light

When I was little I was terribly afraid of the dark. In fact, as an adult I tend to be afraid of it sometimes as well. If there is a thunderstorm and the lights go out my pulse goes up and I desperately try to adjust my eyes to see in the dark. In the Bible we learn that God is light. 1 John 1:5 says, “..God is light and in him there is no darkness at all”. Scripture clearly states that if we walk in the light the blood of Jesus will cleanse us of our sin and lead us to spiritual satisfaction.

In the Bible, light is represented as absolute truth, holiness and life. Darkness is portrayed as sin, evil and death. As Christians we are taught to seek the light. We can do this through prayer, reading scripture and serving others. 

In the Bible, Jesus is described as “the light of the world”. In John 8:12 Jesus says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life”. Jesus lights our path so we may walk in spirit and in truth. Walking in the light will bring us everlasting life through Jesus’ death and resurrection. 

Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path”. Meaning if we walk in Jesus’ spiritual light he will provide for us spiritual direction and guidance. Walk in the path that Jesus has forged. 

Sometimes we can stumble in the dark and loose our direction. It may start as a small distraction and grow into something that takes us away from God’s guidance. Sometimes we do not intend to get lost but little by little it can happen. How do we find our way back to God? First, stop and reflect about what happened to make you stray, ask for forgiveness and pray, this will bring you back to him.   

Ephesians 5:8 says, “For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light, live as children of the light”. In this verse Paul tells us to come back to God from the darkness. God is very concerned about our fate, if we continue to be in the dark he will not rest until we are back to him. 

Matthew 5:16 says, “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your God in heaven”. God tells us not to keep our light to ourselves but to shine it on others. Do not hide your faith, reflect it, show your kindness and love. 

How do we live in and reflect God’s light? Like a lighthouse that stands on a hill reflecting light we should do so as well. Reflect the light of Christ to others so that they may see his love and the kindness of your heart. Follow Jesus and show others how magnificent it is to walk in the light. 

Dear Lord, help us to free ourselves from the darkness and seek out the light. The spiritual light of Christ lights us from within and we will live in the light forever. Amen

Lost and Found

​Have you ever lost your child? Even for a short time? I have, and I can tell you it was one of the most stressful days of my life.  My children are 35 and 33 now, and even though they’re adults, I still worry about them. I worry about them getting into a car crash, getting seriously ill, or other needless worries. I know God says not to worry, but I’m a mother and I still do. I remember one time when my son was three years old and I was very worried about him. We went to the grocery store; just another typical shopping trip. I had some film I wanted developed, so I went to the service counter. In those days, you put the film in a little bag and wrote what type of prints you wanted, your address, and other things on the bag.  My son was near me and he wandered over to a toy section close by. Draw Near To Me

​Sunday is a special day at our house. My husband and I start out the day by going to a local coffee shop about an hour before church.  I order my usual latte and my husband orders an iced tea. We both order a blueberry muffin and sit at our usual table.  During this time together we not only enjoy our treats but also enjoy each other. We talk and talk about our days over the past week and really enjoy our time.   In this day and age it is very important for married couples to sit down and talk. Making a weekly coffee date has really improved our relationship. We rush through our week with our jobs, children and homes, sometimes saying little or nothing to each other. In the same way we cultivate a relationship with each other, it is very important to have a healthy relationship with God.
